What is the flu?
The flu or influenza is a highly contagious virus which affects the respiratory tract.
It is passed from person to person via respiratory droplets of an infected person, especially via sneezing and coughing. You can also catch the flu by touching a surface or object, such as a table, door handle or pens, which has been contaminated by infected respiratory droplets.
Flu symptoms can include fever, chills, body aches, runny nose, cough, a sore throat and tiredness.
Most people who contract the flu will recover within 2 to 7 days. However, the flu can cause other serious complications, including ear infections, secondary lung infections, and even death.
An annual influenza vaccination is the easiest and most important measure to prevent influenza and its complications.
Who is recommended to receive a flu infection?
The flu vaccine is recommended for all people aged 6 months and older.
It is even more important for people who are at high risk of complications, such as pregnant women, people over 65 years of age, people with chronic medical conditions and Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders.
Who is eligible for a free flu vaccination?
The Australian Government funds a free flu vaccine under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for the following groups at higher risk of complications from influenza:
What if I am not eligible for a free flu vaccine?
For all others who are ineligible for a free flu vaccine, you can be vaccinated at Berwick Pharmacy at a cost of $25 per person. Note that our trained pharmacists can vaccinate anyone aged from 5 years old and up.
