Ovarian Cancer & Teal

Ovarian Cancer & Teal

Health Weeks

February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month – an annual Ovarian Cancer Australia campaign. This campaign raises awareness of the signs and symptoms, risks and impact of ovarian cancer. It also raises vital funds to support Ovarian Cancer Australia’s work in awareness, support, advocacy and research. This February, Ovarian Cancer Australia invites Australians to host an Afternoon ‘Teal’ (teal is the international colour for ovarian cancer). It is an opportunity to bring family, friends and local community together to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

1495_Womens_cancer_and_Afternoon_TealOvarian cancer is a disease where some of the cells in one or both ovaries start to grow abnormally and develop into cancer.

Approximately 1,400 Australian women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year. Sadly, the death rate for ovarian cancer is relatively high – 2 out of 3 Australian women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will die, and around 75% of women are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Read More >

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a pain

Living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a pain

Pharmacy news

It’s not often discussed, but Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a very common problem, which affects a significant percentage of Australians from all walks of life.  IBS can start at any age and causes repeated tummy pain, stomach bloating and a change in bowel habits – sometimes alternating between persistent constipation or diarrhoea.   Women are more likely to have the condition.

The cause of IBS isn’t known, but it is generally aggravated by the following things:

  • Breads and cereals with refined grains
  • Processed foods such as biscuits/chips
  • Coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol
  • Dairy
  • Large meals
  • Too much fibre (which is hard to digest)
  • Consuming too much water with a meal
  • Cruciferous vegetables such as onions, broccoli and cabbage
  • Stress and anxiety

Try the natural remedy that
works wonders

A great natural way to treat IBS and functional indigestion is withIberogast Oral Liquid.

It harnesses the power of 9 herbs including chamomile, lemon balm, milk thistle, and bitter candytuft.  These medicinal herbal extracts work together to target discomforts and pain in the abdomen. It reduces gas formation, calms over-active gut muscles, speeds up sluggish gut muscles and reduces gas inflammation. Read More >

Look your best this summer with minimal effort

Look your best this summer with minimal effort

Loo Your Best This Summer with these products from Estee Lauder

Stav, Co-Founder of Kiana BeautyStav, Co-founder Kiana Beauty.

I love Summer.

I love the slower pace, days at the beach, lingering lunches and balmy nights.

I also love creating a natural summer look with minimal effort, one that strikes a balance between a barely there makeup look, while still feeling polished and achieving skin that is radiant and even-toned.

These are the four Estee Lauder products that are on high rotation for me each summer, for an easy, breezy, summer look.  I hope you love them too.

National Condom Day

National Condom Day

Health & Wellness

National Condom Day is an annual health initiative that coincides with 14 February (Valentine’s Day). This is an ideal opportunity to promote healthy relationships, and remind people about the risks of sexually transmissible infections (e.g. genital herpes, and HIV/AIDS), and unplanned pregnancies.

National Condom DayResults from the National Survey of Australian Secondary Students and Sexual Health (2013) indicated that:

  • amongst sexually active students, the most commonly used form of contraception was the condom (58%), with the majority (63%) of students believing that ‘most’ or ‘all’ of their peers use a condom when they have sex
  • the majority (67%) of sexually active students reported that a condom was available the last time they had sex, and 86% of these students reported using it
  • when referring to their last sexual encounter, 23% of sexually active students reported having sex in a less controlled space (i.e. friend’s house, car or outdoors), where a condom may not have been readily available.

Overweight and obesity

Overweight and obesity

Health Weeks

Overweight and obesity is a National Health Priority Area, currently affecting 63% of Australian adults and 25% of Australian children. The latest statistics show 35.5% of Australians aged 18 years and over are overweight, and almost 28% are obese.

1494_Overweight_and_obesityIt has been predicted that by 2025 around 83% of Australian men and 75% of women aged 20 years and over will be overweight or obese.

The causes of overweight and obesity are not easy to define. Although diet and physical activity are central to maintaining a healthy weight, social, environmental, behavioural, genetic and physiological factors can play their part in contributing to weight gain. For many, weight gain is hard to avoid and very difficult to reverse. Read More >

Soothe your baby’s skin with Jurlique

Soothe your baby’s skin with Jurlique

Beauty News

For me, one of the sweetest scents in the world is the smell of a freshly bathed baby.

I love how a bath can help a baby unwind, making him or her sleepy and extra cuddly, allowing me to inhale that sweet scent just one more time before bed.

I have used Jurlique Baby skincare products on all three of my children from when they were tiny, and still do.

It reassures me that Jurlique products are made from all organic ingredients that are grown on their farm in the Adelaide Hills.

There are no irritants or toxins in their formulations and their baby skincare products are tested and approved by a Paediatrician and Dermatologist.

This endorsement is important to me. Life is a busy juggle, and Jurlique have taken the worry away from me about what I’m putting on my children’s precious skin.

My sweet 12-month old son, with his delicious thighs smells heavenly after bath time

The Jurlique Baby skincare products are gentle enough to be used from one month old and smell heavenly.

The divine lavender scent is calming and it helps connect my older children back to nature.

Just the way I like it.

You can find our favourite Jurlique baby products at Berwick Pharmacy or buy online here

Healthy Heart

Healthy Heart

Health & Wellness

The importance of doing something healthy for your heart is highlighted by the fact that 90% of adult Australians have at least one risk factor for heart disease. Risk factors include a family history of heart disease, and the risk also increases as you age. Gender is important because being male is also a risk factor.

1541_Healthy_heart_healthy_lifeAs a nation, we tend to take our hearts for granted but the sobering facts are that cardiovascular disease is the cause of 34% of deaths in Australia, followed by all cancers on 29%.

This year, National Wear Red Day is taking place on the 14th February 2017. Heart Research Australia is inviting Australians to wear something red on this day for a gold coin donation to help raise funds for Heart Research Australia’s research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Further information is available at www.heartresearch.com.au/wear-red-day/.

Information on heart disease and living with heart disease is also available at Heart Research Australia’s website www.heartresearch.com.au. The site also provides four simple steps that we can undertake to make some inroads into improving the health of our hearts.

The first step is to keep moving at any age and at any level of fitness. Exercise has many benefits beyond fitness and flexibility. Exercise stimulates the body’s immune system, reduces the blood’s ability to clot easily, improves brain function and lowers blood pressure. Read More >
